Etymology: For the ending cf. φωλεός, κολεός a.o. To σῦς, but in detail unclear. After Prellwitz BB 22, 108 from *-φεϜος to φύω (with full grade as in Skt. bhávati `be, become'). Semant. clearer Lagercrantz (s. Idg. Jb. 13, 201): to Lat. fovea `pit(fall)'. Older proposal (by Fick 1³, 699) in Curtius 600 (to Lat. favus).
